Beyond oil: What the Equatorial Margin could mean for logistics in Amapá

Brazil's environmental agency, Ibama, has authorized Petrobras to drill three additional exploratory wells in the Equatorial Margin, advancing efforts to delineate the discovery made at the Morpho well, off the coast of Amapá. In a report by CNN Brasil, written by Beatriz Oliveira, industry experts weighed in on the region's potential — which still hinges on confirming the commercial viability of the find.

For Marcus D'Elia, a partner at Leggio Consultoria, the impact of a confirmed discovery would extend well beyond oil production itself. According to the consultant, if Amapá is chosen as an offshore support base, it would require investment in logistics, transportation, maintenance, and suppliers, giving rise to a new economic chain in the state.

"If the projected volume is confirmed, the state could become a new hub for Brazil's oil and gas industry," he said.

D'Elia also noted that Ibama's authorization for the new wells signals that the contingency plan submitted by Petrobras was deemed adequate for exploration activities to continue in the region.
